There is a claim that the Ashikaga shogunal house has subtly changed. Lord Ashikaga Yoshiteru used to be the 14th shogun, but he has changed to the 13th, and between him and the 15th shogun Ashikaga Yoshiaki, Ashikaga Yoshihide is now the 14th shogun. One reporter says they got into it through Nobunaga’s Ambition (the video game), then in their student days they devoured books on the history around that area to no end, and as for Yoshiteru himself, they often used him in the “rebuild the shogunate” playthrough of the game, and he was definitely the 14th shogun with no mistake about it, and yet it has changed. The current 14th shogun is, in the history we have now, someone who was unable to complete the warrior-side procedures necessary to become shogun, was kept waiting by the court with the conclusion indefinitely postponed, and in the end was assassinated, and it was attributed to the faction supporting Ashikaga Yoshiaki, Yoshiteru’s younger brother. He is Lord Ashikaga Yoshiaki, the 15th shogun and the last shogun of the Muromachi shogunate, and this has not changed. Also, the father of Yoshiteru and Yoshiaki remains as Lord Ashikaga Yoshiharu, the 12th shogun, and in the pre-change history this person was said to have been the 13th shogun. The shogun who disappeared was probably a shogun from around the time of the Onin War (a civil war beginning in 1467), and it seems that someone among the 9th through 12th has been rendered as someone who “did not exist” in history and erased. In the facts as they stand now, the Onin War’s outbreak is inexplicable, and why it occurred and why it expanded is considered a mystery. In memory, there was a clear cause for the outbreak, namely that due to the court’s mishandling, they designated a shogun in complete disregard of warrior customs; as for why it expanded, when things had almost settled with both sides splitting the difference, Hino Tomiko (a powerful court lady and consort) and anti-shogunate court forces committed…
