In Oda Nobunaga’s attack on Ishiyama Hongan-ji there should have been tens of thousands of dead on the Ishiyama Hongan-ji side, and in the Nagashima Ikko-ikki he slaughtered forty thousand, and in the Ishiyama War…
In Oda Nobunaga’s attack on Ishiyama Hongan-ji (a fortified temple complex in Osaka), there were supposed to have been tens of thousands of dead on the Ishiyama Hongan-ji side, and in the Nagashima Ikko-ikki (uprising of the Ikko sect at Nagashima) he massacred 40,000, and in the Ishiyama War (Ishiyama Kassen) he killed the same or more, and in later archaeological excavations, from strata even lower than the layers containing human bones thought to belong to the Toyotomi side dead from the Siege of Osaka, an enormous number of charred human bones bearing gunshot wounds and sword cuts were unearthed, and it was announced that he may have killed an estimated maximum of about 70,000 to 80,000. But if you look now, although the Oda army’s strength is higher than I remember, the numbers on the Ikko side are reduced, and while it seems several thousand on the Ikko side died in the Ishiyama War, it has become that there was no massacre of a gruesomeness approaching 100,000. Also, in the burning of Enryaku-ji on Mount Hiei, about 8,000 were killed on the mountain and more than 20,000 were killed in the related settlements at the foot of Mount Hiei, or so it should have been, and the excavations, too, were supposed to have indicated that this was no exaggeration at all, and that the numbers might actually be even higher. As expected, the numbers on the Enryaku-ji side have been reduced, and in each case, because they did not oppose (resist) Nobunaga very much and could not barricade themselves as before, it seems to have resulted in a reduction in the death toll. Conversely, before the change Hiyoshi Shrine (Hiyoshi Taisha at the foot of Mount Hiei) was also caught up in the burning of Enryaku-ji and suffered enormous damage, but although Hiyoshi Shrine was supposed to have been allowed by Nobunaga, in deference to the Imperial Court’s wishes, to rebuild right away, it has changed so that Hiyoshi Shrine also was not permitted to rebuild for a long time after the war.…
