There are quite a few people who remember that the shogi titles numbered Ten Crowns.
There are not a few people who remember that shogi titles used to be ten crowns. With a 10-title system, Yoshiharu Habu was the only deca-crown, and now that Ryuo/Meijin Fujii (7 crowns) is in an 8-title system, I was thinking, even if he tries his best he’ll only be “Fujii Eight Crowns,” huh, that’s kinda something, but now when I look it up it turns out shogi has supposedly always only had seven crowns. Where did the Judan and Tenno go? In particular, as for the Tenno title: in shogi the Ryuo was the top title, but they forcibly renamed the Gyoku-i (the “King’s Rank,” a title below Oza) and launched it as being of equal status to the Ryuo (the fans did not accept this and in the end it did not officially become of equal status; the fans blocked that, but later the Judan Association did something even more vicious), and since core shogi fans did not recognize the Tenno as an official title, when the mass media wrote “So-and-so Tenno Ryuo” for dual titleholders, they protested, saying Correct it; to that extent, there is a story that it’s good that it disappeared. Also, many people remember that Yoshiharu Habu has no children, but in fact he has two daughters.
