There is fluctuation in how people differentiate oji vs oji (uncle younger than one’s parent vs uncle older than one’s parent), and oba vs oba (aunt younger than one’s parent vs aunt older than one’s parent).
There is a wobble in how people differentiate between the two spellings of oji and the two spellings of oba. Many remember it as: oji/oba with the “elder” character = father’s side, and oji/oba with the “younger” character = mother’s side; but in the world as it is now, regardless of father’s side or mother’s side, your parent’s older brother is oji with the “elder” character, younger brother is oji with the “younger” character, and older sister is oba with the “elder” character, younger sister is oba with the “younger” character.
