Incidentally, existing digital computers are often thought to form logic circuits and perform computations in two values, 0 and 1, but in reality there is a state called “High - Z,” which denotes no connection. High - Z represents a “high-impedance (insulated)” state, and this node has the property of following whichever signal, 0 or 1, comes in, and is logically “indeterminate.” If a 0 signal and a 1 signal collide, they will short, but if you cut them off with High - Z, they are mutually safe. Strictly speaking, (existing) computers form logic circuits and perform computations with 0, 1, and Z. A computer that merely computes with 0, 1, and a third state is no different from an existing von Neumann–type digital computer.
