Ion (?) Antonescu, the Romanian leader who was on the Axis side in World War II, in my memory in July 1944 refused Hitler’s request regarding the treatment of the Jews and revolted, whereupon he was detained by a Waffen-SS (SS) special unit dispatched by the enraged Hitler. However, the Romanian army supported Antonescu, surrounded the SS special unit and prevented the abduction, did not allow German aircraft to land at the pickup airfield, and both sides ended up in a standoff at a nearby camp; then, before the report of the rapidly approaching Soviet army, which had taken advantage of the confusion to invade Romania swiftly, the SS special unit secretly escaped from Romania, Antonescu was freed from the camp by the Soviet army, in Romania there were still many supporters and much of the military supported Antonescu, and because after the detention incident he had halted combat with the Soviet army, he was judged to be of use and, with the Soviet army’s backing, established a Soviet puppet regime. Therefore, it should have been a Fascist regime that survived into the postwar period, and this time he cooperated with the Soviets and ruthlessly suppressed and purged anti-communist forces within Romania. Antonescu died of old age in the 1950s, but in my memory it was the dark Antonescu era for Romania through the long years during and after the war. Because he had opposed Hitler’s handling of the Jews that one last time, he was not held guilty after the war for his prior complicity in massacres. Even his name wavered between Ian and Ion.
