When the author’s grandfather was a sixth-grader in ordinary elementary school, in his summer vacation diary in 1938 (Showa 13), there was a mysterious instruction from the military authorities to “carry out light control in preparation for the present situation,” and it is said that illumination and leaking lights disappeared from the night streets. It seems there was illumination even then. Also, from the diary one can see that electrification of trains had progressed quite a bit. Incidentally, in December of the same year, the bombing of Chongqing in China began, and only four years later, in 1942, did the Doolittle Raid finally occur. It seems they were tightening control over the populace quite early on.
